According to the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (Unescap), 345 Filipinos die each day due to transport accidents. On the other hand, there are around 57,000 pedestrians who have been hit by motorcycles or private cars in 10 years, says the Department of Health (DOH).

If you’re on the road in the metro, you’ll see a lot of reckless drivers and careless pedestrians. What will you do in case you get involved in any of these situations: you hit a pedestrian, your car is badly damaged, or you’re injured as well?

Safety first.

Driving is a responsibility and as a responsible driver, you should learn the basics of road safety. You should understand the laws by heart even before applying for a license — drive slowly, observe traffic signs, don’t drink and drive, be patient, and avoid driving distractions.

On the other hand, as pedestrians, you have a responsibility to keep roads safe, too. Stay alert, focus while walking outdoors, be mindful of your surroundings, look to your left and right before crossing the street, avoid blind spots, and follow the traffic lights.

Imagine yourself in a road accident. What precautions should both drivers and commuters take in order to reduce accidents? Here are some tips that you can follow:

1. Think safety first.
Driver - Check on yourself, your passenger, and for other injured persons. Get help right away.
Pedestrian - Assess yourself. If you are badly injured, don’t move and wait for help.

2. Take photos.
Driver - Step out of your car and make sure to take pictures of the accident scene.
Pedestrian - Preserve visual evidence for injury claims or in case you decide to file a lawsuit.

3. Stay calm.
Driver - Talk to the other driver in a calm manner and get their necessary contact details.
Pedestrian - Exchange numbers with the driver so you can easily get in touch for medical reimbursements.

4. Call an investigator

Driver and Pedestrian - Ask help from a police officer or an MMDA official to investigate the incident.

5. File a report.
Driver and Pedestrian - Go to a police station to file an incident report.

6. Call the insurance company.
Driver - Inform your car insurance company of what happened so you can process your claims immediately.
Pedestrian - Contact your insurance agent to know what needs to be done in order to file for claims.
