Every household has a toilet. Although the origin of the first toilet can be traced back to as far as the Neolithic era, the modern toilet as we know it—with flushes and water tank mechanisms—only came out in the 20th century. And yet, it’s already something we can’t live without. Well, how else are we going to get rid of our natural excretions, right?

Speaking of natural excretions, these are the stuff our bodies get rid of in the form of urine and feces. Pee and poo, if you’re wondering. We all know how toxic they can be to the environment so, as a result, our toilets would definitely also be a breeding ground for harmful germs and bacteria. Here are some of them:

  • E. coli

  • Streptococcus

  • Hepatitis

  • Salmonella

  • Norovirus

These germs, bacteria, and viruses can be harmful to your health and can cause a wide array of illnesses. The best thing to do is to learn how to use and clean your toilet properly.

Sanitation Tips:

  1. Put down the lid.

An open lid during flushing increases the risk of contamination. So be sure to keep the lid closed when you flush.

  1. Use toothbrush covers.

Since toilets can release harmful feces-infected aerosols when you flush, be sure to keep your toothbrush covered at all times.

  1. Wash your hands.

This should go without saying but a study shows that even though 97% of people say they wash their hands after using the bathroom, 65% of people actually do.

Cleaning Tips:

  1. Apply a toilet cleaning liquid to the bowl.

Allow the liquid to soak before swishing the cleaner around the bowl with a toilet brush. This kills off many of the harmful bacteria and removes any dirt from the walls of the toilet.

  1. Clean your toilet lid.

Using a disinfectant, don’t forget to dab a damp cloth over your toilet lid too. A lot of the bacteria accumulates on the lid so it’s best to wipe it clean. Just be sure to wash your hands right after.

  1. Don’t neglect the exteriors.

A lot of people just focus on the bowl itself and miss out on cleaning the base and floor around the toilet. You can use a tile cleaner for scrubbing off any dirt and debris from the outside of your toilet to keep it squeaky clean.

Keep yourself and your family safe from harm.

Aside from cleaning your toilet to perfection, you should also be ready just in case you or anyone from the family gets sick due to any toxic elements found in your own bathroom.
