Caring from a Distance

love and realationship

Being the child of an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) comes with a unique blend of pride, strength, and sometimes, guilt. Pride for the sacrifices made. Strength to hold the fort back home. And guilt for not being physically present for our hardworking parents who are thousands of miles away. But even from afar, love travels. Here are meaningful ways you can care for your OFW parent even when you can’t be by their side.

1. Stay Consistently Connected

Simple video calls can go a long way. Set up a weekly call when you can each share moments from your daily lives. Even if these calls are brief, taking the time to show that you care can be meaningful. Furthermore, your efforts to remain emotionally close can ease the homesickness they feel.

2. Send Care Packages

Balikbayan packages don't have to be one-sided. Sending your OFW parent a thoughtful present from the Philippines, such as a family photo, their favorite local snacks, or a handwritten letter, can provide warmth and comfort abroad.

3. Celebrate Milestones Together

Remember to commemorate birthdays, holidays, and even work accomplishments. Organize online celebrations or coordinate with their friends overseas to celebrate— small efforts like this help to ensure that they are not forgotten or alone on special occasions.

4. Be Their Health Advocate

OFW parents often downplay their health to keep their families from worrying. They may push themselves too hard, focusing solely on earning and sending money back home. That’s why it’s important to regularly check in on their well-being and gently remind them to prioritize rest and routine health checkups

5. Protect Them with Insurance

Distance makes it harder to respond quickly during emergencies. Getting OFW insurance coverage for your parent provides a safety net—from medical needs to repatriation if necessary. It’s a thoughtful way to care for them and gain peace of mind, no matter where you are. For more information, visit https://plgic.ph/OFW.

You don’t have to be close to show you care. A call, a gift, or even an insurance policy can be powerful ways to support your OFW parents—just as they’ve supported you.
