Ano’ng pinaka-kinatatakutan mo sa buhay? What is your greatest fear?

Fear. Anxiety. Phobia.

‘Wag tayong matakot na pag-usapan ‘to.

Fear is that unpleasant emotion you feel when something or someone seems to cause you pain, danger or threat. Sa Tagalog, ito ang tinatawag nating ‘takot’.

Anxiety is a feeling of worry about something that is going to happen.

Phobia is an irrational fear and a type of anxiety disorder that keeps you from doing the things that you like to do and interferes with your normal life.

Everybody feels scared, and it’s normal to be scared. It is a natural emotion and a survival mechanism. Fear sends a signal to our bodies to react to danger with a fight or flight response. Dahil dito, ang takot ay nagiging essential part of keeping us safe.

Some of us fear rejection. Some are scared to be alone.‘Yung iba naman, may FOMO o Fear Of Missing Out. The outbreak of the COVID-19 virus has caught us all off guard. Both adults and children were led to contend with strong, stressful and overwhelming emotions. Even social protocols under the new normal triggered feelings of isolation and loneliness.

While fear is a valid human reaction, we need to understand that it can also pose threats to our physical health if uncontrolled, mishandled or mismanaged. It becomes unhealthy when it prevents you from doing the things you would otherwise enjoy. Fear may lead to cardiovascular disease and gastrointestinal problems and can accelerate aging or even lead to premature death.

If you think you’re experiencing anxiety disorders, consult your doctor immediately for medical advice and proper treatment.

You may also want to try these fear busters to help you cope with your day-to-day anxiety.

Face your fears. Do some research, read up and experience it yourself para malaman mo kung dapat ka bang matakot sa bagay na ‘yon. Unawain mo muna ang sitwasyon dahil sabi nga nila, people often fear and hate what they do not understand.

Tell someone about it. Tell someone you trust about how you’re feeling. Maybe they can give you advice on how to overcome it.

Don’t be a perfectionist. Hayaan mo lang how things will turn out as long as ginawa mo lahat ng makakaya mo. Don’t overdo it. Lahat ng sobra ay masama.

Focus on positive thoughts. Find a place where you can find peace and calm. Relax. According to www.psychologytoday.com, ‘Stress, for instance, is a subjective thing. Unless we are talking about physical strain, stress is typically induced by our thoughts about what is happening. It isn't the actual event itself that incurs the feeling of stress. It is our thinking behind it that does’.

Embarking on new life chapters can also be terrifying.

Yes, fear can emotionally paralyze you or make you small, but when it is faced and confronted, you can actually use it to your advantage. Don’t let it get the best of you. If the idea of getting old frightens you, why not do something about it while you’re still young? Ngayon pa lang, habang may panahon pa at kaya pang magtrabaho, focus on investing for your senior years para ‘pag dumating na ‘yung panahon na retired ka na, hindi ka na gaanong takot at nangangamba.

If you are a child who fears for your parents’ future, you can battle your worries by doing your part. Show them support by studying hard and completing your course on time to help them prepare for retirement. Imbes na mag isip ng gastos, with your daily allowance, think of ways on how you can be financially independent.
